City Set to Spend $16.7 Million to Overhaul Bell Street

SAN ANGELO, TX —San Angelo City Council members are set to approve a resolution Tuesday funding the much delayed and anticipated reconstruction of Bell Street. 

According to the agenda, the council will vote to adopt a resolution issuing $16.7 million to reconstruct the failing roadway from River Drive to the Old Ballinger Highway.  The agenda calls for the council to “Consider a resolution directing publication of notice of intention to issue combination tax and revenue certificates of obligation to provide funds for street improvement projects; and resolving other matters relating to the subject.”

Construction was set to begin in the fall of 2017.  The city planned to reconstruct Bell St. in three phases, but only one bid came back and it was over budget.  The Council then combined all three phases into one bid. 

If the council approves the notice of intent on Tuesday, funds for the project would be available by mid-April. 

The $16.7 million is the second installment of a ten year, $80 million plan to rebuild major streets in the city including Bell St, College Hills, Chadbourne and Southland.   

In other council business Tuesday, the council will consider awarding animal adoption services to Concho Valley PAWS for $60,000 for 2018 with the option to extend the contract for four more one year terms.
