Top Five Things to do at Christmas at Old Fort Concho

SAN ANGELO, TX – The largest annual fundraiser for the Historic Landmark Ft. Concho, runs Dec. 1-3.  The days are filled with events, history, vendors and canon fire!

All the featured events during the period have a limited amount of tickets available for purchase, and sold on a first come basis.  Most of the events are geared for the whole family and several activities engage children on the topics of Ft. Concho and period history, Christmas and Indian lore. Our top ten picks for the three day long event are:

1. Lions Pancakes with Santa. Join Santa for pancakes on Sat. morning in the stables from 7:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. beat the line by purchasing your combo tickets for breakfast and admission early.
2. Base Ball. Come enjoy a classic past time at the field Saturday at 2 p.m.
3. Frontier Christmas Ball & Concert. Dance to live period music in the stables Sat. from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Period dress is encouraged but not required.
4. Christmas Shopping in the Historic Fort Buildings. Browse in the Officers' Row, Commissary and barracks for great artisan items you can only find during Dec. 1-3.
5. Historic Walking Tours.  Take a free guided tour Fri. & Sat. at 4 p.m. (They start at the Visitor Center.)

The Fort Concho was originally established in 1867 to protect frontier settlements while they also patrolled and mapped the West Texas region.  When it was in full force there were between 400-500 infantry, calvary, staff officers and personnel.  In 1889 Fort Concho was deactivated.

Today the Fort has 23 original and restored buildings and functions as a historic preservation project as well as a museum.  It is owned and operated by the city of San Angelo.
