Firefighters Battle Blaze in Abandoned Duplex on San Angelo's North Side

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Fire Department battled a structure fire that was reported at noon at 611 W. 15th St.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Todd Sanford, when the first units arrived, the firefighters reported seeing smoke rising from the right side of the duplex. Crews from Station #5 performed a “fast attack” into the interior of the duplex.

Once inside, about midway through the interior of the building, firefighters encountered flames. “They knocked them down really quick,” Sanford said.

After the flames were extinguished, and exhaustive search for occupants of the duplex was conducted. Firefighters came up empty. Sanford said the building was abandoned and the windows were boarded over. Surprisingly, though, the building still had electricity service.

As we left, firefighters were tearing out major portions of the interior ceiling to make sure no heat spots or hidden flames were present. There were no injuries.
