Art Installation at Sunken Garden Park

SAN ANGELO, TX ‚— Sunken Garden Park lines the 700 block of Abe Street and over a million vehicles each year pass by it.  Driving past you can not help but notice the sculptures that grace the lawns as they flow down into secret paths, artistic bridges and well tended gardens that lead to the San Angelo Riverwalk where over 14 million dollars have been invested for the city of San Angelo's crown jewel.

The 16 outdoor sculptures are part of what Howard Taylor refers to as a triumvirate that also includes the National Ceramic Competition, and En Plein Air Texas - the largest sale of its kind in the nation.  Sculptors apply for the contest for their artwork to be judged and chosen for display.  This year there are 11 new installations and 5 current installations are staying.  "They should be complete by this evening," Laura Huckaby states, the administrator of the display.  This group of artwork will be on display for two years, and new applications will begin coming in July or August of 2019.

While speaking with Howard Taylor, director of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, he points out that, "Richard Salmon, and his wife Pam sponsored the improvement of the area and the installation with their vision and initiative."  He also said the museum gets national and international guests that exclaim at the high quality of the display that you would be hard pressed to find even in much larger communities such as Dallas.

The public is invited to learn more and celebrate Friday night 5:30-8 p.m. come as you are to enjoy free food, drinks and musical entertainment.
