Mother's Day Specials to Say Thanks to That Special Person

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS -- Mother’s Day is a time to show appreciation to those special ladies who were there before anyone else. Here are some ideas on how to show your gratitude tomorrow, on Mother's Day, for everything your mom has done.

At its core, this holiday is about spending time with family; and there’s no better way of starting off the day than attending an early morning church service.

Celebration Church, located at 2639 Sunset Drive, is hosting a special 10 a.m. service recognizing all mothers. Pastor Brandon Clark said the Mother’s Day service provides a nurturing message that teaches people to embrace the role of parenting and to help pass it on to future generations of parents.

The service includes the honoring of mothers in the congregation, and usually includes handing out gifts as well. For this year's service, custom made shirts have been printed to hand out to the mothers in attendance.

“From a scripture perspective, [The Bible] talks about honoring parents,” Clark said. He added that as a nation we set aside the second Sunday of May to honor mothers. However, he added, this should really be practiced naturally throughout the entire year.

“The way we operate as Christ-Followers, it’s important for us as a nation to cultivate a mindset of being grateful,” Clark explained.  “Whether or not somebody has a great relationships with [their mother], it’s important to still show some gratitude and honor.”

After the service, the church is also hosting a professional photographer photo booth, so families can capture their special moments during this year's Mother’s Day, creating long lasting memories.

Buying flowers is always a nice way to show how much you care about someone; offering flowers to our mothers is just a special way to thank them for all they do.

Christi Yancey, owner of the Friendly Flower Shop at 2501 Johnson Ave, explained the traditions that go along with giving flowers on Mother’s Day. Traditionally, wearing a red corsage meant your mother was alive, and wearing a white corsage symbolized a mother's passing. The hundred year old tradition isn’t practiced regularly nowadays, Yancey said. However, there are still those who request corsages for the occasion.

Some of the more popular flower selections for this day include gerber daisies, roses, and mixed arrangements with multiple colors.

There’s no better way to show you care for your mother than spoiling her with baked treats. The bakery at H-E-B has a variety of cakes, pies, and other sweets that are on sale this week.

The popular quarter sheet of chocolate-dipped strawberries is now on sale for $20.98 instead of $27.98. All pies have a one dollar off coupon. H-E-B's selection of cheesecakes, heart cakes, and Boston cream cheesecakes will have their own special deals as well.

Brenda Rodriguez, baker at H-E-B, said the cookies and heart cakes are a popular choice every year. Anything with fruit also sells fast; fortunately, H-E-B has a wide selection of fruit cakes and strawberry pies.

“Anything with fruit is going to sell like crazy,” Rodriguez said.
