Big Changes to San Angelo Trash Pickup Service Starts April 3

SAN ANGELO, TX — Bulk trash pickup every other week begins April 3. The new service will alternate every other week with recyclable collection. Residential customers can learn when their bulk trash and their recyclables will be picked up with a map and a calendar posted at cosatx.us/SolidWaste.

Tan garbage bins will continue to be emptied weekly.

PDF and interactive maps from the City’s website divide each collection day into a red zone and a blue zone. See the interactive map here. When each region on the map will have bulk or recyclable pickup is annotated on this *pdf. The calendar shows which weeks in each zone that bulk trash will be picked up and which weeks recyclables will be collected. The map, the calendar and lists of recyclable items and accepted bulk items will be inserted into customers’ March water bills.

Garbage and recyclables will continue to be picked up on the same day and in the same location for customers. Bulk items should be placed at least 3 feet away from the tan bin to avoid interfering with weekly trash collection.

Customers requested the change to more frequent bulk service, mainly to accommodate the collection of yard waste such as leaves and grass clippings. Yard waste, which is not recyclable, may also be placed in the tan bins.

Bulk items include furniture, appliances, mattresses, barbecue grills without propane tanks, toilets, carpeting, fencing, wooden pallets, bags of yard waste, and brush and limbs cut and bundled in lengths of no more than 4 feet.

Non-acceptable bulk items that should instead be taken to the landfill include household trash, tires, concrete, construction materials, glass, hazardous waste, roofing materials, propane tanks, soil and rocks. City water customers who bring a bill and a photo ID with a corresponding address to the landfill can get one free monthly dumping.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 27, customers may request a second green recycling bin at no cost by calling 325-657-4323 or visiting the Water Customer Service office at 122 W. 1st St., adjacent to City Hall. Those who request a second cart by the last week of March will receive the cart before April 1. Customers who request a second green bin after Oct. 1 will be charged a delivery fee of $21.18. Customers currently paying for a second recycling cart will have the charge removed from their account, effective April 1.

The City Council has also authorized the solid waste administrator to remove green recycling bins from customers who place garbage in them after being advised not to do so. San Angelo’s contamination rate – the amount of recyclables tainted by garbage – is approximately 35 percent.
