International ASU Student Headlines Woodwind Concert

A press release from Angelo State University announced that bassoonist, Alfredo Bonilla, an ASU international student from Veracruz, Mexico, will perform a free public concert at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 3 S. Randolph St.

The concert is titled “Musical Magic: Escape From the Quotidian.” The woodwind concert will also feature ASU music faculty, other ASU students and community musicians.

Bonilla, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in music with a focus on bassoon, has been accepted and awarded a full-tuition scholarship to the prestigious bassoon summer course taught by Professor Asger Svendsen at the Music Academy in Malmö, Sweden. Svendsen accepts only one student at a time to this program. Donations will be accepted at Bonilla’s concert on May 1 to help cover his travel costs.

Since arriving at ASU, Bonilla has performed as a guest with the San Angelo Symphony and Big Spring Symphony and as a member of the ASU Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Woodwind Quintet. In the summer of 2015, he attended the fifth annual Bassoon Week at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. In Mexico, he was a member of the Veracruz State Symphony and the Youth Orchestra of Mexico.
