SAPD Officials Address Signs Prohibiting Concealed/Open Carry of Handguns

San Angelo Police Department officials have received several requests from business owners as to where signs can be purchased to prohibit the concealed carry or open carry of handguns. Because of the amount of calls received, SAPD wants to clarify that the department does not provide or sell these signs.

Sgt. Cade Solsbery, public information officer for SAPD, said if a business wishes to prohibit the carrying of concealed handguns, the following must appear on the sign:

"Pursuant to Section 30.06, Penal Code (trespass by license holder with a concealed handgun), a person licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (handgun licensing law), may not enter this property with a concealed handgun."

Additionally, Solsbery stated the information must be printed on the sign in both English and Spanish, and he suggests using contrasting colors (i.e. a white sign with black letters) with block letters at least one inch in height. The sign must be clearly visible and conspicuously displayed to the public at each entrance to the business.

Solsbery also said if a business wishes to prohibit open carrying handguns, the following must appear on the sign:

"Pursuant to Section 30.07, Penal Code (trespass by license holder with an openly carried handgun), a person licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (handgun licensing law), may not enter this property with a handgun that is carried openly.”

Again, this information must be printed on the sign in both English and Spanish, and all other requirements in regards to colors, letters, size and visibility are the same as mentioned previously.

Solsbery added that if a business wishes to prohibit both open carry and concealed carry of handguns, both types of signs must be displayed. Also, several sign companies in San Angelo were contacted, and all have either made these signs, or they have the capability to make the proper sign.

Solsbery stated, “The San Angelo Police Department cannot endorse a particular sign company to use. To find listings for sign manufacturing companies in San Angelo, please conduct a search on the internet, or utilize the yellow pages in a local phone book.”

There were about 8-10 of us discussing this exact topic in the coffee breakroom the other morning and all had the same consensus..... If I (we) walk up to a business that has one or the other or both signs on the front door, I'll walk away and try to find another business that sells what I (we) was after that doesn't have the signs on the door. If there is no other business to find whatever it may be locally, I'll (we'll) order it off Amazon with 2 day free shipping.

Also read an article the other day that will be very interesting to follow as to how it plays out, in that a person who is licensed to carry and is inside one of these stores that does not allow the right to carry person inside unless they are unarmed, If something should go South and that person winds up getting injured (or killed) because they were not allowed to defend themselves when they would have had that defensive weapon otherwise, that lawsuits could be filed on the business/owner by that person or any other person who could have prevented the occurrence if they had been allowed to carry....... Very interesting thing to follow and you can bet it WILL happen somewhere to someone.

What in this world does this comment have to do with concealed or open carrying of handguns? Not one darned thing. I have yet to see anyone open carrying a handgun since the law changed. At least not in San Angelo. I'll say it again, those that stood around parking lots and paraded with long guns pushing for the open-carry law months before the vote, did nothing but rile people like the "ranter" up and their antics were perfectly legal then and still are now. We are talking about handguns here and licensed carry. Much ado about nothing at this point. If it became a problem, THEN H.E.B. should have taken action. They are the ones that are paranoid!

After seeing your "correction", I looked back at the initial comment by "Doctor Ding-bat" and I honestly don't see why you, Jim JustJim got so bent out of shape over what he said. Also, Tiffany Ellringer made a really good comment. You do realize that you don't need a license to open-carry a long gun, whether it be an "assault rifle" or an AR-15. The use of the term "assault rifle" is so misconstrued it's not even relevant anymore. Liberals don't even know what an assault rifle really is, they just think any rifle is an assault rifle, much like a baseball bat could be construed as an "assault bat", I guess, if you are being beaten by one.
Note: There are no longer Concealed Handgun Licenses. Now it's known as License To Carry, LTC, not CCL. And again, it's been about a week since my first post and I still have not seen anyone open carry in San Angelo. If I ever do, I suspect it will be rare.

I'll just delete my "correction" and everything. If that's not a clear enough acknowledgment that I was wrong, I don't know what is.

LOOK EVERYBODY, I WAS WRONG AND IDSYLER WAS RIGHT.

Jesus Christ, I hope that's a good enough "correction" for you.

Jim JustJim,
Its okay, I had a few points wrong on my end I hadn't gotten all the info on open carry completely correct. Sorry if you felt attacked, was not the intention on my end.

Okay, let me point out that I do not have a concealed carry license, and I do not plan to obtain one currently I have no desire to carry a weapon on my person.
First by being licensed by the state you cannot carry an assault rifle. These licenses are strictly for carrying hand guns only. Most people who already have a concealed carry license are not even thinking about openly carrying. For someone to openly carry they must be licensed with a concealed carry license. People cannot just start carrying their weapons around because they want to. You can transport a weapon for various purposes, but you cannot take these weapons into establishments without the proper licensing's, which these people must carry at all time on their person. There is a heavy fine for a person who carries but does not have the proper licensing. If you’re worried about a person who has a concealed or open carry weapon you can always ask to see their permit. If they do not have their permit on them you can make your own judgment about contacting the appropriate authorities. Also, people who have obtained the proper permit have to go through a rigorous back ground check, Mental background check, as well as training for operating a weapon and how and when o use it if the need arises. Please look into the actually licensing that a person in Texas must go through before they are able to obtain their license. These classes and the actual license cost on average around $200 dollars and takes several weeks. Please check out the following website. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/RSD/CHL/index.htm
You do not need to worry about the people who are licensed; it is the people who have obtained their weapons through criminal means. Anyone with a criminal background cannot obtain a permit to carry. Are there some people out there that just want to carry it because they believe it looks cool, “yes”, but do you think they are the ones willing to sit through classes and training and get background checks; Probably not. If you do not like guns, that are perfectly fine, just keep in mind that there are many good people who have gone through the training not because they are afraid, but because they want to be able to protect you and others if the situation arises. The police are not everywhere all the time. They respond as quickly as they can, sometimes it is not soon enough. Police should always be called in emergencies and always will be especially by the permit holder.
I hope the link I provided gives you a bit of peace of mind or better understanding on the licensing, but there are idiots in the world. You can cure ignorance, not stupidity.

H.E.B. stuck their "no open carry" sign, at least at the eastern entrance, behind a bunch of "stuff" and the darned thing is really difficult to see. White letters on a clear background. That makes about as much sense as posting one of these signs anyway. Has anyone seen anyone anywhere carrying openly? I haven't and I can't find anyone that has. H.E.B. jumped the gun (no pun intended). Paranoia deluxe!
