The driver of the truck didn’t notice the problem until arriving at the parking lot of the Burger King, spreading hydraulic fluid into the lanes lanes on Koenigheim St. (U.S. 277 through town). A lane of traffic was still blocked at 8 a.m. this morning while Republic completed the cleanup.

“When he (the truck driver) noticed it, he called us and we had an immediate response and got it cleaned up. We definitely wanted to get it out of the way for the morning traffic,” David Harwell, Republic’s operations manager, said. The San Angelo Fire Department and police were dispatched to U.S. 277 to block off the lane and direct traffic.

Republic also dispatched its street sweeper to the scene. “It doesn’t travel that fast, so it took a while for it to get here,” Hartwell said. The sweeper is kept at the landfill in the far northeast corner of the city.

Republic applied an “oil dry” pellet solution that soaks up the hydraulic fluid. It required two or three pickup loads of the pellets to complete the cleanup.

Koenigheim St. was passable as of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
