Congressman Mike Conaway Visits San Angelo Aug. 4

 

Texas Hunger Initiative hosts Congressman Mike Conaway in a visit of one of the Kids Eat Free meal sites on Tuesday, August 4, 2015. As Chairman of the House of Agriculture Committee, one of his top priorities is to ensure implementation of the new farm bill.Congressman Conaway reviews the programs and policies within the jurisdiction of the committee, which includes the nutrition assistance programs.Summer Meal Programs served at area schools are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and he is supportive of these programs that offer free meals to children in the summer.The THI Kids Eat FREE lunch program serves meals not only in July but is also able to continue serving lunch meals in August after the school sponsored federally funded meal programs have finished for the summer.Kids Eat Free offers free lunch at 10 sites which are sponsored by churches in Tom Green County.The Texas Hunger Initiative is excited to highlight this program, showing how churches, businesses,and individuals work together to make such a huge impact on the community by providing free lunch to so many hungry children.

Baylor University’s Texas Hunger Initiative (THI) is a capacity-building, collaborative project, which develops and implements strategies to end hunger through research, policy, education, community engagement and community development. THI works to make the state food secure by ensuring that every individual has access to three healthy meals a day, seven days a week. THI convenes federal, state and local government stakeholders with nonprofits, faith communities and business leaders to create an efficient system of accountability that increases food security in Texas and beyond. Headquartered at Baylor University, THI has 12 regional offices located in Amarillo, Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock, McAllen, San Angelo, San Antonio, Tyler and Waco. At THI, Summer Meals program evaluation and outreach is funded by the Walmart Foundation.
