Supermarket Hours and Restaurant Openings on Thanksgiving Day

San Angelo shoppers looking for that last-minute sprig of sage may be well advised to shop early this year, as many of the city’s smaller grocery stops will shutter their doors on Thanksgiving, while others operate on limited hours in order to spend time with family.

Four San Angelo supermarkets will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving this year, including both Lowe’s locations, Albertson’s and Super Mercado. Super Mercado staff will enjoy an early closing on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

HEB will be open on Thanksgiving from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Green’s Grocery drive through will open at 6 a.m. The grocery portion of the store will open at 7 a.m. and close at 1 p.m. Retail beast Walmart will remain open 24 hours.

San Angelo diners preferring the “no muss, no fuss” approach to holiday meals this year have 11 options, according to the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, ranging from traditional Thanksgiving buffets to Asian cuisine to high-end and comprehensive menus.

Among those restaurants open on Turkey Day is the Black Sheep Bar and Grill at the Clarion Hotel, which will offer a full buffet ranging in price from $22.95 for adults, $20.95 for seniors and $11.95 for children 5-12. Children under 5 eat free.

Black Sheep bartender Broc Blasingame explained that the restaurant is taking reservations and encourages large parties to call in advance to reserve a table.

“For main course we’ll have prime rib, slow-roasted mesquite turkey breast, Texas London broil with cilantro cream sauce, chipotle-glazed salmon with chimichurri sauce [and] old-fashioned cornbread dressing,” Blasingame explained.

Sides include the gamut of traditional items like mashed potatoes, baked sweet potato casserole and giblet gravy, as well as numerous other items, salads and rolls. Pies, cheesecakes and ice cream will be served as well, and the bar will also be open. A non-alcoholic beverage is included with the buffet.

The Village Café will also be open on Thanksgiving, serving a traditional menu in addition to the regular menu.

“It will have turkey and dressing and ham,” said Assistant Manager Amanda Blanek, “there will be a beef and all the traditional side dishes…there’s also a special cranberry orange salad that we do that is very [much] like what your grandma used to make.”

The Village Café will also serve various cobblers, pies and cookies for dessert and will not be taking any reservations for Thanksgiving Day. The traditional meal will be served buffet-style and runs $15, including sales tax and a drink. Children’s dinners will be based upon what they take from the buffet. The Village Café does not serve alcohol.

Over at Miss Hattie’s, diners are encouraged to make reservations for the Thanksgiving buffet. The menu will feature prime rib, turkey and ham, as well as mashed potatoes, candied yams, green bean casserole, sweet corn and rolls. Apple pie, pecan pie and pumpkin will be served for dessert.

Adults will pay $26 for the Miss Hattie’s buffet, and children will run $9.
