Man Receives 11-Year Sentence After Hitting Pedestrian Downtown

A San Angelo man was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Monday in Judge Ben Woodward’s 51st District Court, when he pled guilty to a charge of accident involving injury or death, after hitting a person with his truck downtown and speeding away from the scene.

According to a press release from the 51st District Court, Raymond Medina, 27, left Crazy Goat on March 24, 2013 after consuming a couple of alcoholic beverages. Medina was driving down Chadbourne at approximately 50 mph when he struck a pedestrian in front of the House of FiFi DuBois, the release states. A witness in another vehicle observed Medina hit the pedestrian and speed away in his truck, running multiple red lights as he left the scene.

As a result of the crash, the pedestrian suffered extensive injuries, which resulted in her undergoing multiple surgeries.

Judge Woodward sentenced Medina to 11 years confinement and ordered the defendant to pay restitution. In addition to the charge, Medina pled guilty to an enhancement paragraph in the indictment, which due to his previous convictions, enhanced the crime to a second-degree felony, punishable by 2-20 years and up to a $10,000 fine. Woodward further ruled that Medina’s truck was a deadly weapon, which means that Medina will have to serve at least half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
