County HR Director Announces Candidacy for County Clerk

Terry Mobely, Director of Tom Green County Human Resources, announced his candidacy for County Clerk at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday in front of the County Courthouse before a small crowd of supporters.

“I have over 30 years of management experience,” said Mobley. “I have a lot of experience in managing people.

Mobley will be running against Elizabeth McGill, who currently holds the position of County Clerk,

“She’s got her talents that she brings, I have my individual talents that I bring,” explained Mobley. “It’s up to the voters to decide that.”

Mobley used to work in operations and management of the United States Postal Service, where he started out just being a mail carrier.

“I always have heard people say ‘smaller government, smaller government’ no one can do [it]. Well, since I’ve been with the county I’ve done it, my department has been cut by a third,” said Mobley.

He believes there is a way to streamline everything by using good business practices.

“I was told when I came here, that you can’t run county government like a business,” said Mobley. “That’s true to a certain extent, but there are many aspects of county government that good business principals used properly can save tax payers money.”

Mobley said that he started thinking about running earlier this year when the question was posed “where can you serve the most?” and Mobley decided that his skills would best be served at the office of the County Clerk.

“I don’t make rash decisions,” he said. “I’ve put a lot of thought and prayer into this.”

Mobley believes that a contested race is good for everybody and that it’s up to the voters of Tom Green County to decide if he’s the man for the job.

He states that many people are backing him in his decision: “I think I have tremendous support.”

Those who showed up for his announcement did nothing but prove that point.

“He’ll do a great job,” said Cheryl West, a member of his Sunday School group. “Terry is about as above the board as anybody I know.”
