The Backstory on the 91-Point Ride at the San Angelo Rodeo 2017

SAN ANGELO, TX -- When Kash Morgan, a second-grader at Coleman Elementary school, stepped in the to arena of the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Sunday afternoon, few knew what a sensation his 91-point ride atop a sheep would become in the Internet.

Kash entered the Sonora Bank mutton busting contest held during an intermission between grown-up rodeo acts. Mutton busting resembles bull riding, except it is for kids, and instead of a bull, the rider hops on a sheep. The rider who hangs on the longest (usually 8 seconds, but it’s not strictly enforced) and has the best “ride” gets a score between 0 and 100. At San Angelo’s rodeo, age is not as big of a factor as weight. Contestants must weigh less than 50 pounds.

Sunday afternoon, Kash atop his sheep was released and he held on with everything he had as his sheep carried him almost all the way across the arena. Kash slipped to the side of the sheep, but still held on, as the sheep turned right. About half way through the turn, he was “bucked off.”

“He’s been doing mutton busting since he was four,” said his proud mother Tina Hall Morgan.

Kash’s mom said Kash idolizes his father, Kevin Morgan, who briefly was a professional bull rider. Dad gives Kash tips, mom admitted, and this isn’t his first rodeo, either. Kash made a splash at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo in Abilene last September.

“Kash has an extreme love for the sport of bull riding and looks up to all the guys doing it,” she said.

PBR bull rider J.B. Mauney is Kash’s hero. Mauney was the number one ranked in the world bull rider in 2015, earning $1.54 million that year.

Kash may be on to something. In a 2012 profile of his hero in the Las Vegas Weekly, it starts out with,” At the age of 3, J.B. Mauney started riding sheep.”

Kash’s favorite bull is the legendary Bushwacker, now retired.
