SAN ANGELO, TX — Goodfellow Air Force Base announced today via a press release that a ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled on June 23 at 11:30 a.m. for the grand opening of an Islamic mosque for active duty military and foreign military students who are practicing Muslims.
We called the 17 TRW Public Affairs office to confirm this and talked to Robert Martinez, GS-12, this afternoon. He confirmed a mosque was opening on Goodfellow AFB.
Goodfellow AFB currently offers no services for the Islamic faith. Taylor Chapel, the 17 TRW Chapel, is shared by Catholics, Protestants, and Mormons. Martinez did not elaborate on the Islamic facility, other than to confirm the ribbon cutting later this month.
The absence of existing Islamic worship services listed on the Goodfellow AFB website begs the question of why a separate mosque facility is needed? “The opening of the mosque on Goodfellow is a prime example of the Air Force’s determination to provide religious freedom and accommodations to all Airmen,” the base press release stated.
There are no mosques located in San Angelo.
Lackland AFB, also a training base and located in San Antonio, has a mosque, called the masjid at the DLI Students' Center. It serves the international students on Lackland AFB and a handful of Muslim U.S. military members.
As part of its mission, international students from allied foreign countries train at Goodfellow AFB.

I think that the point Big Daddy was trying to make is that in some of our past where mosques go up trouble soon follows.

PermalinkThe only trouble that follows is caused by ignorant people who believe Muslims "belong" in one certain area of the world. Having a Mosque is no different than you having the ability to worship whatever religion you are, I'd suspect aetheist by your non Christian views towards others, in whatever building you do it in. Big Daddy is not intelligent enough, based on his comment, to add any additional thought to the clear garbage leaving his mouth.

PermalinkI've lost friends and family due to the religion of peace. I was stationed in country and saw with my own eyes the religion of peace. We will not get along since they refuse to play nice and don't believe in live and let live. They also are the biggest human rights violators on the planet. That might be important to you if your female or playing for the other team.

PermalinkCM, you saw "in country" is what happens when a country is invaded for no real reason. Let me ask you, if we were invaded by another country, at the scale we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, how would we react? I know for my part I wouldn't play nice and definitely wouldn't live and let live. And "they" aren't the only one that commit human rights violations. We have a few nasty ones of our own.

PermalinkOur country was founded on religious freedom, the constitution says freedom for ALL religion. Our forefathers didn't say "freedom of religion except Islam" Those Muslim service members at Goodfellow Air Force Base (and everywhere) who put their lives on the line to defend the constituion and the right of freedom of religion for EVERYONE deserve to have a place where they can freely practice their faith in their tradition. The same right that you have because those Muslim service members fight for your continuing freedom to do so. If you disagree with that you are in direct conflict with the very principles and disciplines that America is defined by. This is monumental, it's needed, and it should be celebrated. I am very proud of the individuals that went through the arduous process to make this a reality. - From a Christian Veteran.
