Texas Has Record Breaking Voter Registration

AUSTIN, TX - According to a Texas Secretary of State press release, the state has had an influx in the number of citizens who have registered to vote in the upcoming election. Approximately 78 percent of the estimated voting population has taken the initiative to participate in the electoral process.

Preliminary results indicate that close to 15,015,700 voters are registered of an approximate pool of 19,307,355. The voting age pool does include non-citizens or convicted felons who have not fully discharged their sentence.

Even though voter registration ended on October 11, applications are still being processed, especially those submitted by mail. Here in San Angelo no final numbers have been calculated; the Tom Green County Election Office is still working on processing all applications.

“I don't have final figures,” said Vona Hudson, Election Administrator for Tom Green County. “We are still [entering] everything, and it will be some time before we can get them all entered.”

Texas has definitely seen an increase in the number of registered voters when compared to previous election years. In 2012 approximately 13,646,226 Texans were registered and only 13,575,062 in 2008.

There has also been a substantial increase from the March 2016 primaries where only 14,238,436 citizens were registered.

“Registration is just the first step,” said Secretary Cascos. “I encourage Texans to prepare now for this fall’s election.”
