Thomas to Run for Johnny Silvas' Council Position

Longtime Single Member District 3 resident Harold “Harry” Thomas has announced his intention to seek the SMD 3 Council seat in May’s city election. Current SMD 3 councilman Johnny Silvas has indicated he will not be seeking re-election.

Thomas is a familiar face to many, having served for over 20 years on the Boys and Girls Club board, and on numerous other boards and committees including United Way, Ft. Concho, Rust Street Ministries, Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce Finance committee, twice President of the Leadership San Angelo Alumni Association and recently was selected to co-chair the city’s Charter Review Committee.

Thomas is a 1977 graduate of ASU with a BBA in Accounting. He is also a graduate of the inaugural class of COSA University.

Thomas, now retired, points to decades in accounting with Goodyear as a needed skill that he can bring to the council to benefit San Angelo residents. “From our infrastructure problems, to our water issues, to the need to equip and train our emergency personnel, the problems are always based on budget issues. I spent my career working on the balance sheet. The taxpayers deserve to have a councilman watching the bottom line.”
Thomas is familiar to the council members and the city staff not only from his participation on boards and committees but also because he is an active participant at council meetings, having attended nearly every council meeting for years.

Thomas first came to San Angelo in the late sixties while stationed at Goodfellow, and he decided to make it his home after his service. He and his wife Ann have resided in their home in SMD 3 for over 30 years. They have two adult sons and two grandchildren.

Manual and Rachel Martinez, of Martinez Construction and Ethicon respectively, will serve as Thomas's co-treasurers.

Per Thomas, “I love San Angelo. We help one another, we care about one another, and we can all agree we want our Grand-kids to be able to live here too. They will need good roads, a safe city, and plenty of water … that depends on us today rolling up our sleeves and watching the bottom line!”
