Cody Johnson Packs the San Angelo RiverStage

SAN ANGELO, TX — Friday night, Cody Johnson brought San Angelo to their feet, at least a lot of people from San Angelo. Estimates last night from City of San Angelo Civic Events Director Sid Walker were about 4,000 came to the Bill Aylor RiverStage to enjoy a night of Texas music.

Opening for Johnson was newcomer singer/songwriter Koe Wetzel. It was still daylight, but a larger-than-expected crowd had already arrived by around 7:30 p.m. when the show kicked off. Wetzel played his newly minted songs off his new record Noise Complaint. If you looked around in the audience, you saw many singing right along.

Kevin Fowler took to the stage next. His rowdy, rambunctious style always accents his colorful songs. It’s his attitude, sprinkled in with two decades of hit songs, came through in anecdotes and quips that the audience enjoyed. As Fowler performed, the sun finally set and the air turned cooler.

After a fairly long wait, the main event kicked off with Cody Johnson. After being introduced by Chuck Baker, on-air personality for KKCN Kickin’ Country, Johnson opened with the down low “I Ain’t Going Nowhere Baby.” The new star of the Texas music charts brought screams and singing along to his hits like “With You I Am” and “Me and My Kind.” The crowd especially enjoyed the song that currently sits on the top of the CDX TRACtion music chart, “Wild as You.”

The Cody Johnson performance was briefly interrupted by the rowdy crowd when someone threw beer can at the performers on stage. Johnson took control and told the crowd “don’t do that anymore.”

The San Angelo police detail assigned to show security said considering the size of the crowd, they were pleased they only had to intervene in one incident.

The gates opened early as a line to get into the RiverStage stretched from the main gate to Avenue A beyond the south side of the museum. City workers and the concert promoter Roadhouse Tickets opened additional lanes to check in patrons and kept the line moving fast.

Concessions sales were brisk all night, said San Angelo Host owner Carlo Campanelli. In all, he was pleased with the large turnout.
