Risen: Icon Cinema $5 Tuesday Movie Pick

In a stark contrast from last week’s movie pick of the week, Deadpool, San Angelo LIVE! chooses Risen as the $5 Tuesday flick pick. Risen is definitely not rude or crude, but rather, enlightening.

Risen tells the story of the Resurrection of Yeshua (played by Cliff Curtis) through the perception of a non-believer, Roman Military Tribune Clavius, played by Joseph Fiennes. The Tribune is a man of power who witnesses death on a daily basis, and seeks more power so he can find peace away from death. To do this, he and his aide, Lucius, are tasked by both the Jews and the Romans to solve the mystery of Yeshua’s disappearance from his burial spot during the weeks after his crucifixion. The goal is to allay the rumors the Yeshua is the risen Messiah to prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.

Risen is a 21st Century combination of Christianity meets Criminal Minds meets Magical Realism. This film works because it doesn’t tell the same story we have seen repeated simply with better cinematography. Instead, it provides a new perspective on the story of what takes place following Yeshua’s crucifixion. It also shows how the strange occurrences changed perceptions, creating more believers, including that of a power-hungry many-Gods-believing Roman.

Although Risen did not get the Box Office acclaim of Deadpool, which ranked No. 1 again this week, it did come in third at $11.8 million. Also, critic reviews weren’t as strong with a 5.8/10, or 59 percent, on the TOMATOMETER.

The critic consensus, however, noted that “Risen benefits from a lighter tone than many faith-based productions, as well as a unique take on the Greatest Story Ever Told and a terrific turn from star Joseph Fiennes.”

As for movie lovers, out of 7,460 user ratings, Risen received a 4.1/5, or 80 percent. San Angelo LIVE!--based on the Iconic movie experience (like IMAX), comfortable recliner seating, along with free refills on popcorn and drinks--gives Risen a 4.5/5. This movie definitely provides something new on the story of Jesus, but it’s not necessarily a story that will change the minds of atheists or agnostics. It does, however, entertain and sparks a renewed lightness of heart within those who believe.
