San Angelo ISD Welcomes the New School Year in a Unique Fashion

SAN ANGELO, TX – The annual San Angelo Independent School District Convocation was held on Tuesday morning at the Foster Communications Coliseum to commemorate the start of a new school year.

The students, faculty, and parents walked into crowded stadium ready to welcome the school year in good spirit starting on Thursday, Aug 17.

The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets from Lakeview and Central presented the colors at the beginning the ceremony followed by the San Angelo ISD elementary students who were escorted on stage to sing the national anthem before their adoring fans.

San Angelo ISD Superintendent Carl Dethloff spoke of the bright future for San Angelo ISD and praised the 200 plus educators ready to support and teach the students through another exciting academic school year.

“Over 200 of our educators have developed a curriculum to help all of our learners,” Dethloff stated. “While a robust curriculum will support our academic achievement goals, we still know the greatest impact on student learning is the relationship between students and educators.”

The San Angelo ISD school board, Goodfellow Air Force Base representatives, San Angelo Chief of Police Frank Carter, Tom Green County Sheriff David Jones and San Angelo Fire Department Fire Investigator Ross Coleman, were among the special guests at the Convocation.

After listening to the performance from the combined Lakeview and Central band and choir, the students were dismissed to prepare for the upcoming school year.

Something unique followed the formal portion of the ceremony, as the crowd was shown short clips from the popular quiz show Family Feud as the stage was set-up for San Angelo ISD very own ‘celebrity’ Family Feud quiz show.

Dethloff welcomed to the stage some well-known personalities with Lady “Shha” riding in on a motorcycle and George Strait walking up with his guitar to represent the Musicians. On the other side, Kim kardashian and Mathew Mcconaughey impersonators were representing the Mega Stars with Kim walking in with handbag swinging and Mathew playing to the beat of the music with his bongo drums.

The high school mascots were also present as team captains to provide some well-needed direction for these teams.

The quiz mirrored Family Feud with both contestants meeting at the center of the stage to give what they thought was an appropriate answer for their portrayed characters. For example, when George Strait was asked what a teacher focused reality T.V. show should be named, he replied saying, “do you know all my ex’s live in Texas?”

It was an energized performance that the kept the crowd engaged, while the students began preparations for the upcoming school year.

Lakeview senior, David Moreno, is ready to help lead the schools JROTC detachment as the Group Commander for the upcoming school year.

He looks forward to working with his fellow classmates as they prepare to serve the community and do their best for the detachment.

“One of my favorite things at Lakeview is the annual Military Ball where we can all meet together and have a good time as a group,” Moreno stated.

The upcoming school year is shaping up to be an exciting and educational experience for all members of the San Angelo ISD family.
