Brookesmith ISD Superintendent Steps Down

This past Wednesday, the Brookesmith ISD came together to decide the fate of the struggling school district. According to a local news source, the district has been struggling financially and might not have money to remain after this scholastic year is over.

As the meeting went on, the only plausible solution would be consolidating with a larger district. Brookesmith school board is considering joining districts such as Brownwood or Bangs. The district is projected to have a $300,000 shortfall by next August, making it impossible to continue to operate.

The news source reported that close to 100 people attended the heated discussion regarding the future of the district’s teachers and students. As the members discussed the possibility of joining another district, members of the audience even asked for the superintendent to step down.

Amidst all the pressure, Superintendent Guy Birdwell has decided to resign. According to the school board president Terry Bean, the decision was mutual between the board and Birdwell.

According to the local news source, a major question was asked regarding the future of the teachers currently employed in the district.

“Do you expect all these teachers to come back to school next year? Maybe we’re going to get paid, maybe we’re not,” one person said.

An emergency board meeting has been scheduled for this Friday at 6 p.m., noted the news source.
