ASU Young Writers Contest Winners

 

As part of commemorating the 20th anniversary of Angelo State University’s Writers Conference in Honor of Elmer Kelton, the Department of English and Modern Languages hosted a Young Contest for high school students.

Winners in the categories of fiction-short story, poetry, and personal narrative on the topic “Life in West Texas – A Unique Experience” were announced at the “Tribute to Elmer Kelton,” held Mar. 3rd during the conference.

The winners are:

Fiction – Short Story

  • First: Maddie Morrow of Texas Leadership Charter Academy
  • Second: Hannah Currie of Abilene High School
  • Third: Hunter Roberts of Texas Leadership Charter Academy

Poetry

  • First: Belle Underwood of Richland Springs High School
  • Second: Sara Horn of Abilene High School
  • Third: Macy McNutt of Irion County High School

Personal Narrative

  • First: Hadley Miller of Irion County High School
  • Second: Jordan Gossett of Richland Springs High School
  • Third: Cierra Martinez of Texas Leadership Charter Academy

First-place winners received novels by Kelton and Craig Johnson, the featured writer of the conference. All winners received certificates. Teams of judges from ASU’s English faculty evaluated the 28 entries, with all identifying information hidden.
