Alert Issued: Forgery and ID Theft Victims in Ballinger and Abilene

ABILENE, TX — Abilene police have issued an alert about a couple that has left a string of forgery and ID theft victims across the region.

Gary Berry, 44, of Coleman, was arrested last week for forgery and ID theft. Berry is currently in the Taylor County Jail on bonds totaling $50,000, according to KTXS.

It is believed that Berry was working with another person, Christy Rains, age 40, of Rising Star. Rains would pass forged checks at Walmart Supercenters in Abilene, Brownwood, Sweetwater, Ballinger and Wichita Falls.

During the investigation, detectives have recovered stolen checks and mail from Early, Brownwood, Clyde, Roscoe, Wichita Falls, Olney, Lometa, Callahan County, Ballinger, and Santa Anna, according to police.

Berry was arrested March 8 and he was in possession of more than ”10 pieces of identifying information,” including checks stolen from mailboxes.

Before Berry was arrested the two were driving a white Nissan Quest with extensive damage to the front end.

Abilene Police are asking other law enforcement agencies to watch for activity like this. Those who have similar cases are asked to call Detective Gabe Thompson at (325) 676-6616.
