SAPD Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez provided the following information on this story:
After several ongoing investigations, Martinez was linked to the Burglary of Habitation (Featured on the Facebook Video) that occurred on 1/5/18 in the 1800 block of Upton Street, another Burglary of Habitation that occurred on 1/4/18 in the 800 block of Macann, and a Burglary of Vehicle that occurred on 1/5/18 at the Stripes on La Follette Street.
Video evidence paired with hard work by the Criminal Investigations Division resulted in the positive identification and warrants were obtained.
On January 16, Officers spotted Martinez operating a vehicle (same suspect vehicle from the investigations). Officers knew Martinez had outstanding warrants and subsequently stopped the vehicle. Martinez gave a false name to Police during his detention. As a result, he was charged with Failure to Identify Fugitive from Justice.
SAN ANGELO, TX -- San Angelo Police arrested a burglary suspect after the victim showed them a cell phone video of the man at her home.
According to SAPD Criminal Investigations Division officers, they responded to a call in the 1800 block of Upton St. for information on a burglary of a habitation. According to the victim, 36-year-old Fernando Martinez parked in her driveway and broke into her home.
Court documents indicate the suspect broke into the house through a small utility window. Items including power tools were removed from the residence. The victim arrived home and saw the suspect’s vehicle parked in her driveway and began filming him.
The report says the defendant was shown in the video wearing a jacket, jeans and latex gloves on both hands. He told the victim that he was looking for his dog.
On Jan 16, SAPD CID officers interviewed Martinez. They read him his Miranda rights. Officers showed him a still image of the vehicle and he said it belonged to his mother. Martinez told officers he set off the victim’s alarm while he was looking for his dog. They then showed Martinez a picture of himself wearing latex gloves. Martinez told officers he was out looking for his dog and he was wearing latex gloves because his dog was in heat.
Martinez was arrested and charged with second degree burglary of a habitation. According to jail records, Martinez remains in the Tom Green County Jail in lieu of $30,000 bond.
