Woman with Mental Health Issues gets 5 years Deferred Adjudication

SAN ANGELO, TX – District Judge Brad Goodwin accepted a guilty plea from a San Angelo woman with mental health issues and placed her on five years deferred adjudication.

24-year-old Anita Garza lives in a group home and has a guardian from the Texas Department of Health and human Services.  She was charged with attempting to take a weapon from an officer.

In March of this year San Angelo Police Department officers were called to the 3200 block of San Antonio St.

According to court documents, Garza had run away from the group home.  The investigating officer reported that as he approached Garza, she took rocks out of her pocket and threw them at her caretakers and at him.

The officer then attempted to handcuff Garza.  She reached around and got her hand on his weapon.  He then tripped her to the ground.  Garza got her hand free and again put her hand on his weapon.  After Garza was arrested, she told the arresting officer that she would have shot him if she had been successful in removing his pistol.

The range of punishment for the state jail felony is 180 days to two years.  Garza was placed on five years deferred adjudication and will be placed on the MHMR caseload.
