69-Year-Old Abilene Man Shoots Wife, Has Standoff with Police

ABILENE, TX - Today, a 69-year-old Abilene man engaged police in a standoff after shooting his wife at a home in the 2500 block of South Elmwood.

Abilene Police Public Information Coordinator Rick Tomlin said Dispatch received a call that a woman had been shot at the residence at least once by her husband, Robert Brown.

"Brown remained inside the home," said Tomlin. "The wife was taken to Hendrick Medical Center for treatment of her injuries."

At the time of Tomlin's statement, he said the victim was alive. KTXS in Abilene also reported that the victim is not in critical condition.

Tomlin added that Abilene Police Department's SWAT was called out to the scene.

"For the safety of students and faculty, Austin Elementary was put on High Alert by AISD as part of its protocol due to the proximity of the incident," Tomlin said.

Mr. Brown eventually surrendered to police without further incident, and he is in protective custody at this time.

"Mr. Brown also suffers from a mental ailment," Tomlin concluded. "He will be booked into Taylor County Jail and charged with Aggravated Assault Family Violence."
