County Judge Steve Floyd Addresses Explosion of Crime in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX — In the Tom Green County Jail, there are 548 inmates. That is 99 over the number of inmates the jail was designed, 449 beds.

“There is an explosion of criminal activity in the county. We are not unique in that. Taylor County (Abilene) has experienced some of that, and Midland/Odessa too,” Floyd said.

He said yesterday at the monthly San Angelo Chamber of Commerce luncheon that the plans for the final county jail would be unveiled shortly.  In the meantime, he praised the professional and aggressive law enforcement agencies local to the county, and the cooperation between the agencies.

In response to our question about the cost of the new jail, Floyd said the original plans came back at $60 to $61 million. ”But we scaled that back,” he said. He said the revised plan to be released shortly would be a $50 to $52 million project.
