Griffith also said the case is being investigated as an officer involved shooting, and the Texas Rangers are leading the investigation. Ranger Philip Kemp is the primary investigator, along with SAPD Internal Affairs, SAPD Investigations Division, and SAPD Crime Scene Investigations.

"They're all here investigating, and it's a fluid ongoing investigation," said Sgt. Griffith. "That's what we have at this time."

Currently, the suspect's injuries are unknown. He is approximately 53 years old, and a white male.

As for other injuries or victims, that's also being investigated at this time, added Griffith.

SAISD Response and SAPD Update

In wake of this morning's shooting near Goliad Elementary, SAISD released the following statement:

"SAISD officials have been in close contact with the San Angelo Police Department regarding an incident this morning in the vicinity of Goliad Elementary. The incident has been resolved.  Goliad was locked down as a safety precaution for approximately 10 minutes due to the close proximity of the incident to the campus."

Also this afternoon, Sgt. Matthew Vaughn with SAPD provided an additional update on this morning's shooting.

He reiterated the details released earlier from Sgt. Griffith, and said when officers attempted to negotiate with the 53-year-old suspect in the front yard at the residence in the unit block of E. 40th St., the suspect refused to comply with orders to drop his weapon. Thus, shots were fired.

"The subject is being treated at Shannon Medical Center," said Sgt. Vaughn. "No one else was injured in the incident."

Sgt. Vaughn said this is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released at a later time.

It is a good thing the shooter was anglo , if he had been a black man , they would have filled him full of lead and then some .

The cops here have so far shown some amazing self discipline in not having shot someone sooner than today's incident. Wether it's training, self discipline or plain luck, so far so good. Thanks God the guy is still alive and hope the cop is doing well.

I'm a democrat and it doesn't make me dumb (I'm not deaf and I can speak) and just because he said that doesn't make him a democrat. It also doesn't make him worthless, you need to work on your people skills, death wolf. I grew up here and even though things like that do happen in other cities far too much, it doesn't here. We have a wonderful police force that do their best and I believe are trained well and are genuinely great people.

Dead wolf is so smart ! Too bad i only went to the sixth grade . I wish i could create new words . Miss Grundy my sixth grade teacher would have been so proud of me . She kept a copy of the dictionary on her desk which she fondly called " big words for little minds " , i can just see her now , where shall we put this new word in the dictionary . Oh yes ! This is where we shall put it , in the D's , right behind the word dumb ass ! Well Mr. Dead Wolf you must be watching a lot of TV because you learned to pivot so well . I was commenting of excessive force , not party affiliation . Maybe the ink from all those Neo Nazi tattoos that you are wearing , has gone to your " pumpkin head " Be sure and vote , if you can , go to the polls on Nov 28 , as your Alt Right leader instructed you to . I'll see you at the polls .
