San Angelo Man Assaults Parents, Attempts to Hit Father with Hammer

Yesterday, two San Angelo men, Paul Sopkowski, 66, and Victor E. Amilivia Gomez, 23, were arrested for stabbing a family member and for assaulting two family members and an officer.

In the first incident, Officer Tracy Gonzalez, public information officer, said officers responded to 106 W Avenue N, Sopkowski’s residence, for a reported stabbing. Officers responded and located a female victim who had bruising on her face and a wound to her arm. 

Gonzalez said the victim was transported to Shannon Hospital for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries, and CID responded to the hospital for a follow-up investigation. 

“Sopkowski was located inside a small shack behind the residence on Avenue N and was taken into custody without incident,” said Gonzalez. “He was charged with Class A Assault Family Violence.”

In the second incident, Gonzalez said, just after 9 p.m., officers were sent to a residence in the 1200 block of Dorchester for the report of family violence where the suspect was said to be “out of control.” 

“Upon arrival, the suspect, Amilivia Gomez, rushed the first patrol car on scene and began to repeatedly bang on the hood of the patrol car,” said Gonzalez. 

Amilivia then assaulted the officer as he exited the car and a fight ensued. Backup arrived and Amilivia was taken into custody. Gonzalez said CID responded and learned that prior to police arrival, Amilivia assaulted two family members. 

Amilivia was charged with Agg Assault w/Deadly Weapon, Assault Public Servant, Assault Causes Bodily Injury Family Violence, and Criminal Mischief >=$750<$2500.

This is Sopkowski’s 5^th arrest and Amilivia Gomez’s 1^st arrest.

Including these two individuals, and since our last update, 47 people were booked into the Tom Green County Jail. Fifteen people were arrested on new complaints, five on new complaints and warrants, and 27 on outstanding warrants.

Update 3 p.m.

In an update on the arrest of Amilivia, Officer Tracy Gonzalez said when officers arrived in the 1200 block of Dorchester Drive, just after 9 p.m., the disturbed man came towards the responding officer's vehicle and began to hit the vehicle's hood repeatedly with both hands. When the officer exited his vehicle, Amilivia came towards the officer and pointed a plastic flag at the officer. He began swinging the flag in a cutting motion.

"When the officer attempted to take Amilivia into custody, Amilivia resisted and a struggle ensued," added Gonzalez. "During the struggle, Amilivia struck the officer in the face. Backup officers arrived to the scene and Amilivia was taken into custody."

During the investigation, officers learned that prior to their arrival, Amilivia assaulted his parents inside the residence, and at some point during the assault, he grabbed a hammer and attempted to strike his father but was unsuccessful. His parents reportedly suffered minor injuries from the assault.

Detective Chris Soto and members of CSI responded to the scene, and at the conclusion of the investigation, Amilivia was charged with the crimes previously mentioned.

Gonzalez said the officer assaulted received minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment.
