Sonora Police Officer Shoots Suspect

 

A Sonora police officer shot a suspect this morning Sonora City Manager Ed Carrasco confirmed. Carrasco said the Sutton County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation.

The details that Carrasco could confirm were the time of the incident and the location. The incident happened at approximately 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Everett Drug store on U.S. 277 near the I-10 underpass. The drug store is on the west side of U.S. 277 in the same shopping center as the Pizza Hut when entering the town of Sonora.

The Sutton County Sheriff’s Office said that they are not releasing information yet.

Our verified sources, all of whom asked not to be identified, said that a Sonora police officer confronted a subject who was suicidal. The subject lurched towards the officer in a threatening way and the officer shot the suspect.

Carrasco said the officer involved was shaken up and had to be hospitalized.

Witnesses in Sonora said they heard the sounds of a helicopter after the incident. The condition of the suspect is unknown, and the name of the police officer is being withheld until further in the investigation.

Trooper Justin Baker, who is the public information officer for the Texas DPS and Texas Rangers, said that his office will be releasing official information shortly.

Update 3:18 p.m.

The Texas Rangers will likely be assisting or taking over the investigation. Rangers are on the way to Sonora, DPS confirmed. The last sentence of the story was changed to reflect this.

Update 4:35 p.m.

DPS sent out a new press release that stated the man involved in the shooting this morning is a 39-year-old man from Buda, Texas. His name is still not being released at this time. He was airlifted to Shannon Medical Center where he's currently being treated. The scene is currently being secured by Sutton County Sheriff's Department and Texas Rangers will be conducting the investigation.

...lately it seems when someone is bent on killing themselves, the cops show up & beat them to it. Officers are not trained to deal with the mental defectives, yet there is no one else to call.
