SAN ANGELO, TX — At about 2 a.m. Sunday morning, San Angelo police and the San Angelo Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash on Twohig St. just east of Koenigheim.
The report over the radio was that the truck’s driver was trapped inside the cab bleeding from the head. The San Angelo Fire Department responded with Rescue 1 and Ladder 1 and the firefighters had to cut the driver out using the Jaws-of-Life.
At the scene, there were no other occupants observed.
The driver of the truck was driving westbound at a high rate of speed. From skid marks observed, it appeared that the truck struck the north curb and veered south into the grass median. There, the truck side-swiped a large tree in the median, heavily damaging the driver’s side before spinning and coming to a rest facing south. The drive shaft became detached and can be scene laying on the ground underneath the mangled pickup.
After the driver was extracted, he was quickly loaded into an ambulance and rushed to Shannon Medical Center with police escort. When police escort an ambulance, it indicates very serious life-threatening injuries.
The San Angelo Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigators were processing the scene until the late morning. CSI is used in crash investigations when very serious injuries happen.
The name of the driver and other information is pending the outcome of the crash investigation and notification of next-of-kin.
Alcohol is not ruled out as a cause of the crash, according to multiple first responders at the scene.
