Police Puzzled with Discovery of 2014 Nissan Altima Found Crashed in Red Arroyo

SAN ANGELO, TX — A car was reported stolen after it was found in the Red Arroyo early Sunday morning. How it got there has police puzzled.

San Angelo police were dispatched to the S. Chadbourne St. bridge over the Red Arroyo, approximately in the 2500 block, early Sunday morning at 8:06 a.m. to investigate why a 2014 Nissan Altima was laying upside down, partially submerged in the water below the bridge.

According to San Angelo Police Department Traffic Investigator Brian Bylsma, the incident is being investigated as a hit-and-run. Police could find no one around the car this morning. Shannon’s Airmed 1 helicopter was utilized to search for a crash victim in the thick brush around the Red Arroyo. So far, the police have come up empty. There are no known crash victims.

Bylsma said police contacted the registered owner of the car. She informed police the Nissan was supposed to be parked in front of her house. She said the car was stolen.

The location of the car when it was discovered:

According to Bylsma, the traffic investigation has revealed the car was traveling southbound on Chadbourne, hit the guardrail and fell down the embankment into the water. About half the car was lying in the Red Arroyo waterway before Home Motors retrieved it.

If anyone has any information that will help police solve the question of why the car was found in the Red Arroyo, call dispatch at (325) 657-4315.

Clearly the driver survived the incident, as no one has been found. The question is, did they bail out before hitting the guard rail, or did they go down the bank into the Red Arroyo? If they bailed, they may have some road rash, but possibly not much worse. If they went into the Red Arroyo, the have to have survived, as they weren't found with the vehicle, and the Red Arroyo is too shallow to have swept a body away. There are clearly trails next to the area that feed into residential areas near the crash site. The driver may have fled home, or gone to a friend or relative to tend to whatever injuries they may have sustained. Also, it's not a difficult stretch of road to navigate, and if the car was stolen, the driver had to be either inexperienced, drunk, or both to have gone off the road like that.
