Major Motor Vehicle Accident Slows Traffic on Knickerbocker, Sends One to Hospital

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS -- At around 5:05 p.m. this afternoon, San Angelo police officers were dispatched to a major motor vehicle accident at the crossing of Currier Street and Knickerbocker.

Two vehicles were involved, one 2001 Chevy Impala and one 2013 Cadillac passenger car. San Angelo Police Officer Bylsma stated, "the Cadillac was operated by an elderly female and the Chevy Impala was operated by a Hispanic female and occupied by a minor child."

So far the investigation shows that the "Cadillac was westbound on Knickerbocker, entered the intersection" and collided with the Chevy Impala, which was "southbound coming off of Austin" stated Officer Bylsma. A witness to the accident told investigating officers that the Cadillac driver ran a red light before colliding with the Impala. The witness' statement, Officer Bylsma adds,  coincides with what the Chevy operator had stated during initial questioning.  After impact, the driver of the Cadillac veered into the three eastbound lanes of Knickerbocker and then back into the westbound traffic before coming to a stop.

The driver of the Cadillac was transported to Shannon Medical Center with unknown injuries. The driver of the Impala and the infant passenger, both left for the hospital via private vehicle.

At this time, the investigation is pending as officers still need to speak with the driver of the Cadillac and review video footage taken at the time of the accident. However, as of right now, "all indication is that the Cadillac ran the red light," stated Bylsma.

Westbound traffic on Knickerbocker has been diverted onto Austin and onto a nearby ramp to avoid the accident. Eastbound traffic on the 1000 block of Knickerbocker has been shut down to one lane. These lanes will remain closed, until officers can clean up the street.
