SAN ANGELO, TEXAS -- At approximately 9 p.m. this evening, a major motor vehicle accident, involving one car, occurred on Sunset Drive near Target and the Blue Cross Blue Shield building.

The vehicle has taken out an electricity pole causing the small strip mall, where stores such as Target and Ross are located, to be without electricity.

The possible driver of the car has been taken into custody.

San Angelo Police Department officers and AEP are on scene accessing the situation. This is an ongoing investigation, and LIVE! has a reporter on scene. LIVE! will provide an update once more information becomes available.

UPDATE: 11:15 p.m.

At approximately 9:20 p.m. this evening, SAPD officers responded to a major motor vehicle accident involving a white Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra reportedly flipped on Sunset Dr. where it came to a stop in the nearby parking lot of the Blue Cross Blue Shield office building. During the accident, the car hit a light pole causing a power outage in the surrounding area.

However, as the driver was exiting the vehicle, "he swung an elbow" and "struck one of our officers in the nose," reported on scene officer, Sgt. Antoine Callum. The officer attacked sustained no further injuries.

The driver has been arrested and charged with "Assault on a Police Officer." Furthermore, the driver of the car has an outstanding parole warrant. The driver will be going to jail.

Though the accident is currently under investigation, Sgt. Callum stated, "as far as we know... he lost control of his vehicle, one can naturally assume that speed was a factor." He added, that there was a possibility of the driver driving while under the influence.

The accident caused part of Sunset Dr. to be immediately shut down. Sgt Callum noted that the road will continue to be closed "until AEP can get this cleared up and make it safe to where it is not a danger to the public."

No further passengers were in the car. As for citations, the driver may receive several traffic citations, but, at this time, it is unclear what the exact charges will be.
