Children Injured in High Speed Crash on U.S. 277 South of San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX — Multiple vehicles were reported in a major crash on U.S. 277 south of San Angelo Thursday afternoon just before 2 p.m.

According to reports from the radio, a 40-year-old man was knocked unconscious, and his two child passengers were injured. Reports indicated that an infant was trapped in the vehicle. The other occupant, a teenaged female passenger, may have a fractured leg.

At the scene, it appeared the crash involved a late model Chevrolet Tahoe and a sub-compact sedan. We do not know from what vehicle the injured were removed, though the sub-compact appeared to have experienced quite a hit.

At the scene, traffic was directed around the crash where debris was clearly visible on the roadway. This is a stretch of “Super 2” highway where the northbound side provides an extra passing lane in the 13000 block of U.S. 277 south, near the Door Key Road intersection.

The Pecan Creek VFD was on scene directing traffic. San Angelo EMS dispatched at least two ambulances. Sonora law enforcement were first on scene.

We will provide updates as they become available.

Update 3 p.m.

According to Texas DPS, the crash sent five souls to Shannon Medical Center.

In the two-vehicle crash, the white Chevrolet Tahoe was stopped, facing south, waiting to turn left onto Door Key Rd. The southbound black passenger sedan plowed into the rear of the Chevy at high speed.

Inside the sedan were a woman and her child. Both were transported to Shannon Medical Center with injuries. There were three occupants in the Tahoe. Trooper Yarbrough said the occupants were shaken up but walking around the scene of the crash before being transported to Shannon for examinations.

Trooper Yarbrough also said the driver of the black passenger car will be issued a citation for failure to control speed.

When medics arrived on scene, they reported that the infant was unconscious, and Trooper Yarbrough said the child and the mother were transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment.

DPS is leading the crash investigation. The weather was partly cloudy and the roadway dry at the time of the crash.

Editor's Correction: Previously, LIVE! reported Tom Green County officials were first on scene, but Sonora law enforcement officers were first on scene. Additionally, Trooper Yarbrough clarified later that the vehicle involved was a Chevrolet Tahoe, not a Chevrolet Suburban. The story has been updated to reflect the corrections.
