Driver Hits Man with SUV in Fit of Road Rage at Walmart on Bryant

SAN ANGELO, TX - Just before 10 p.m., San Angelo Police and San Angelo Fire Department Medic 5 responded to a major crash at Walmart, located on South Bryant and Jackson St. Initial reports indicated a  vehicle hit a pedestrian close to the store's entrance.

SAPD Sgt. Adam Scott said, based on video that captured the incident and three or four solid witness statements, it appears the incident was a possible result of road rage.

“A white SUV was driving in the parking lot in front of the grocery side of Walmart at the 3400 block of South Bryant, and [the driver] apparently had a verbal confrontation with a male and a female, possibly a husband and wife.”

At some point, Sgt. Scott said the female and male crossed in front of the vehicle and the driver of the SUV accelerated, striking the male and causing him to fall to the ground. Sgt. Scott said the driver was initially at a complete stopped before doing so.

“The suspect actually stopped the vehicle, got out for a couple of minutes, and then re-entered his vehicle and left,” Sgt. Scott explained.

He added that the man did not show any concern for his actions, and appeared to be talking to the victim and people who were helping him before getting back into his vehicle and leaving the scene.

Overall, the man who was hit appears to have minor injuries. The sergeant said the man was talking and coherent while being treated at the scene. He was placed on a back board and in a neck brace, but that is standard procedure for a crash like this. Medics transported him to Shannon Hospital.

“He’s still being evaluated at the hospital right now,” said Sgt. Scott.

Currently, SAPD has good leads on the suspect and the suspect vehicle. Officers also identified the owner of the vehicle, but could not release that information at this time.

“We’re trying to locate them right now,” Sgt. Scott said.

He concluded that the individual who hit the man will possibly face aggravated assault with a deadly weapon due to the vehicle being used during the assault.
