San Angelo Police Provide an Update on Teens Involved in Rollover Crash

The San Angelo Police Department Traffic Division is continuing their investigation into a rollover crash that occurred on Bentwood Country Club property in the 1700 block of Loop 306. Six teenagers were reportedly in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Officer Tracy Gonzalez, public information officer for SAPD, said officers were dispatched to the frontage road at approximately 9 p.m. for the report of a rollover crash with trapped occupants. San Angelo LIVE! heard the call on the scanner, however, at approximately 6:20 p.m. Gonzalez said officers arrived to the dispatched area, but initially could not locate the scene. They eventually located the involved vehicle, a silver 2004 Toyota 4 Runner, about three-tenths of a mile away on a maintained private road that runs north and south from the frontage road. The maintained road belongs to Bentwood Country Club.

Gonzalez stated that the vehicle’s driver, a 17-year-old male, was transported to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance for treatment of incapacitating injuries. He is reported to have undergone extensive surgery and remains in intensive care. The front passenger, a 15-year-old male, was also transported to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance for treatment of unknown incapacitating injuries. Two other male passengers, ages 15, were evaluated at the scene and later released to their guardians. Additionally, two other male passengers, ages 15 and 16, were reported to have left the scene prior to first responder’s arrival.

“Evidence at the scene indicates the driver was operating the vehicle at an unsafe speed on the caliche road when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll multiple times before coming to rest on the vehicle’s right side,” said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez added that the driver appears to have been the only one wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash; however, police have not yet been able to speak with all of the passengers. One passenger was reported to have been traveling in the back cargo area. Another passenger was ejected from the front windshield.

At this time, names are not being released. This incident is still under investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available. Gonzalez said charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of the investigation.
