Police Respond to Nearly 50 Crashes Friday

A sheet of ice covers most San Angelo streets this evening, causing vehicles to lose traction, slip and slide all over the road as motorists make their way to their destinations.

Public safety officials issued warnings in the early morning, advising drivers to avoid the roads unless absolutely necessary. However, despite the warnings, emergency officials have been tending to a high number of traffic-related calls throughout the day.

Between 10 p.m. Thursday and roughly 4 p.m. Friday, 49 crashes and nine stranded motorist calls came into San Angelo dispatch. Emergency personnel warn that the hazardous conditions have not lessened and urge motorists to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, both in the city and in the county.

The National Weather Service of San Angelo is forecasting similar conditions for Saturday morning, with a possiblity of precipitation through the night. TxDOT pretreated the city's main arteries on Thursday evening and Friday morning, however new precipitation will increase the hazard.
