Why Traffic on U.S. 67 Came to a Standstill During Rush Hour Monday Evening

Rush hour traffic on U.S. 67 was stalled Monday evening at 6:40 p.m. when a three-vehicle crash sent one to the hospital. The crash happened approximately five miles west of San Angelo near the intersection of the road to the Twin Buttes Marina.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2002 Ford Explorer was stopped in the left hand westbound lane attempting to make a left turn into an RV park. Meanwhile a 2013 Lincoln MKS sedan was also in the left lane, slowing to stop for the Explorer.

Meanwhile a 2004 Honda Civic sedan was in the right hand lane behind the Lincoln and was attempting to pass slower traffic in its lane by using the left lane as a passing lane. The Civic driver did not see the stopped cars ahead and crashed into the back of the Lincoln. As a result of the impact, the Lincoln crashed into the back of the Explorer.

All three vehicles ended up facing west within the inside westbound lane of U.S. 67.

Traffic was backed up for miles heading either direction on U.S. 67 while the crash scene was cleared. Dove Creek VFD provided traffic management. Also tending the scene was the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Department and DPS was the investigating agency.

DPS reports that the driver of the Honda Civic was issued a citation from failure to control speed.  She also endured minor injuries and a friend or family member transported her to Community Medical Center.

Trooper Ramiro Garza, Highway Patrol, San Angelo, was the investigating officer
