DPS: Six-Vehicle Pile-up Near Wall Caused by Semi Rollover, Spilled Pipe on Road

A truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer drove over a puddle of water on a wet and rainy U.S. 87 northbound lane and caused a six-vehicle pile-up near Wall early Wednesday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2007 Volvo Truck Tractor pulling a Flatbed Semi-Trailer, loaded with pipe, hydroplaned and drifted off the right side of the roadway.  The driver over-corrected to the left, which caused the big truck to enter a broadside skid back across the roadway. The truck then rolled over into the center median. The truck was northbound on U.S. 87 near the Crook Road intersection in Wall. The rollover spilled the truck’s load of pipe into the roadway.

Being the dark, early morning hours of 6 a.m. in a driving rain, the vehicles following the semi did not notice the pipe spilled across the roadway. One-by-one, each vehicle crashed into the pipe, causing vehicles behind to run into one another.

Among the crash victims were a 2010 Ford Van, driver and passenger injured; a 2014 Ford F-350 Pickup pulling a Flatbed Trailer; a 2009 Ford Edge SUV; a 2007 Truck Tractor pulling a Semi-Trailer; and a 2013 Ford Truck.

The pipe-hauling truck driver that rolled-over was issued a citation for driving at an unsafe speed.

Investigating the crash was Trooper Alan Dykstra, Highway Patrol, San Angelo.

Update 12:06 p.m.

DPS said that the driver and a passenger in the 2007 Volvo Truck Tractor pulling a Flatbed Semi-Trailer were also injured.
