Truck Bursts into Flames Near ASU

A vehicle fire in the 2100 block of S. Van Buren Monday morning sent black smoke billowing toward the sky that was visible for miles.

The call came in a little before 10 a.m. and radio traffic indicated that a truck had white smoke, possible steam, coming out from underneath it.

An eyewitness on the scene, who arrived just after the driver exited and left the vehicle, said he saw the truck and it looked like it might have been overheating.

"A few seconds later, it just got thicker and thicker (the smoke), and then it just burst into a flame, basically," he said. "The flames got bigger and the tires popped, and it just got bigger and bigger."

The witness said the truck was burning 10 minutes top before the fire department arrived and extinguished the flame. No one was injured in the fire.

Fire Marshal Ross Coleman is investigating the fire.

Update 11:10 a.m.

Fire Marshal Ross Coleman said that the cause of the fire is undetermined. However, he said that there is a posibility that the front passenger side brake was locked on the disk, causing friction and over heating.
