Madstyle Vintage, Destination Memory Lane, Celebrates 5 Years

SAN ANGELO, TX – Madstyle Vintage at 113 E. Concho Ave. is a business run by a San Angelo family, dealing in nostalgia.  They carry mid-century modern furniture, vinyl records, toys, kitchen items, home décor, clothing – really anything vintage.  In addition to their own merchandise, they rent booths in the giant, historical building at the Concho Crossing downtown shopping area that once housed Western Mattress but now holds Whiskey River, Think in a Box and Madstyle Vintage.

The brother-sister duo, Tyler Martin and Kendra Martin, decided to open a store selling their curated unique finds on W. Beauregard downtown in 2013 as a “passion project.”  They have grown their business and its services with success since then. They perform estate sales, add to the products at the storefront, as well as rent booths to private vendors in the nearly 6,000 square foot store on E. Concho.

“I love San Angelo! I never understand when people talk about wanting to leave – every city has its problems but the people here are so welcoming and friendly,” Said Tyler. He continued to say his family moved here around 15 years ago from the Midland area and he has loved it here ever since. The business is a family affair with the duo’s mother, Paula Martin, and longtime family friend Janet Holt running the store when Tyler and Kendra can’t be there themselves.  The sibling’s parents are extremely supportive of Madstyle Vintage. Until a recent Cargo Van purchase, all furniture pickups and deliveries were done with their dad’s F-150.

If opening a business at 22, dealing in unique items that are twice if not more his age was a challenge, the store doesn’t show it.  The Martins work hard to keep the displays changing regularly. “We have some customers who come in at least once a week to see what is new, what has moved and changed,” said Tyler.  And it is working! The store is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. The store has increased the number of vendors by 500 percent, the square footage 140 percent, and the annual revenue 240 percent. This is remarkable because many new business ventures fail in the first two years.

Tyler said one of the many ways they are set apart from similar stores is how much everyone enjoys themselves when they are at Madstyle Vintage.  Some customers tell him of stories or memories brought back by seeing the items for sale in the store. He said they even regularly catch people dancing in the aisles to the music they play.  The atmosphere draws a much younger crowd than you would expect of an “antique center,” Tyler jokingly refers to the giant building and collection. “We are introducing great style and quality to a younger generation,” he said.

“You can go to stores today and buy furniture made to look like these pieces, but they aren’t going to last.  This coffee table is over 50 years old and in great condition. Where else can you go locally and buy vinyl records? Especially this large of a selection.  Being at Madstyle is an experience. Part of buying vinyl is digging through the selection for what catches your eye – and the smell of records. It is the same with most of the items here.”

On April 13, Tyler plans to celebrate 5 years in business in a very big way. 6:30-9:00 p.m. they will be open to the public with games, prizes, giveaways, sales, snacks and adult beverages.  Whether it is your first time or you have been there a hundred times – it is the perfect time to walk in.

“You meet so many interesting people in this business.

"We recently shipped Madstyle T-shirts to fans in New Zealand.  People seem to have fun when they are here and they leave with a smile,” Tyler said.
