Ag Team Wins First Range Contest

Angelo State University’s inaugural Undergraduate Range Management Team took first place in its initial contest, the Texas Section Society for Range Management’s (TSSRM) Undergraduate Range Management Examination, earlier this month at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.

The ASU team placed first with 256 points, edging out the team from Texas A&M University (248 points). Also competing were teams from Texas A&M-San Antonio, Southwest Texas Junior College and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Individually for ASU, senior Kye Burris of Poteet placed second out of 18 competitors, senior Chris Miller of New Braunfels placed third, senior Cody Riddle of Tuscola placed sixth and senior Will Fuentes of Van Horn finished 11th.

The contest was the first of its kind to be held in Texas and was conducted during the TSSRM Annual Meeting. It consisted of a timed exam with 51 questions and problems in six categories: range ecology, grazing management, range improvement, range regions, range inventory and analysis, and multiple-use relationships. The exam questions were selected from material submitted by university faculty, industry and government agency personnel, non-governmental organizations and ranchers. The three highest individual scores from each team were added together to calculate their overall team score.

The ASU team is coached by Corey Owens, a senior instructor and research associate in the ASU Department of Agriculture.
