Water Main Breaks Happen Simultaneously all Over San Angelo Thursday Evening

Thursday evening at approximately 7:15 p.m., several main water line breaks were spilling water all over the College Hills area of San Angelo and near some locations downtown.

Water Distribution Superindenent Simon Cuellar said, "We have approximaely five main breaks going on right now. The first one started around 6:45 p.m...we are rounding up as many people available to make repairs."

At the intersection of Oxford Avenue and TCU Avenue, reddish water from the red clay of the area rushed down the streets. Additional runnoff from the same water main break could be seen rushing down Harvard Avenue and Johnson Street nearby.

Other breaks:

  • 3337 Trinity (near College Hills Blvd.)
  • N. Magdalen
  • 16 S. Irving Street
  • 2502 Loop 306, in front of Nacho's Restaurant

The break at TCU and Oxford has been isolated, Cuellar said. The break on Loop 306 is a "service leak". Crews are still trying to isolate the break on Trinity and are checking on the breaks on Irving and Magdalen.

The San Angelo police dispatch said that they had been notified, and the City of San Angelo water department was also notified. Crews should be working on the water line breaks this evening, Cuellar said.

It's that blended radioactive water that has eaten through what was left of water mains that have been underground for decades.......

These water mains and lines breaking will increase in occurrence as the dilapidated infrastructure is exposed to age and erosion. The roads are in terrible condition and are buckling. Just drive down Southwest Blvd. toward the Mall and get a neck jolt right in front of McDonald's due to the buckling of the road surface, dips and cratering.

Looking at the condition of a couple of the roads, and the huge patches of fresher asphalt in the pictures tells me that they have already attempted repairs...... to me it tells me that this is an on going problem or someone didn't do their job correct the first time. Wonder how much money and water was lost due to improper repairs.... and what is a ticking time bomb out there.......

Our city council have a lot to complain about with the low water usage that most people have strived to conserve, But someone for got to remind the water department that not keeping the water mains maintained will cause another loss of income that the city will not be able to charge for.

Yup. Slapping a patch on the pipe seems like the way they do things around here. It seems like my street springs a leak every 6 months or so. They havent caught on that "re-work" is time & money lost down the drain!!! Hehehe

It seems that when the temperature stays hotter than normal the pipe and mains that carry the water seem to be stretched to the limit. Apparently the water department had hoped to get by without these problems. I just hope that the patching is not just a quick fix and nothing else is done. The city of San Angelo is only fooling itself by quick fixes like the water mains,street repair and street and traffic lights. How in the world has our city prepared itself for the rush of new people from the oil boom?
