San Angelo's Top Bars Report Their Top Drinks

Umbrella drinks, shots and long drinks may have their place in San Angelo, but it certainly isn’t at the top. Three of the city’s top-ranking watering holes report that when it comes to alcoholic libations, their clientele prefer a chilled domestic over fruity concoctions, some accounting for well over half of beverage sales.

“Really, it’s beer all the way around,” says Andrew Duffley, Assistant Manager of the San Angelo Buffalo Wild Wings. “This is definitely a beer-drinking town.”

Coor’s Light, Bud light, Budweiser, Michelob Ultra and Dos XX were named as the top four beers between Twin Peaks, Fiddlestrings and Buffalo Wild Wings, but the type of beer preferred is really difficult to pinpoint, Duffley says.

“There’s quite a few people that are split between different beers,” he continued. "I would say the most popular is split between Bud Light and Coors Light, however…craft beers are definitely going up and increase by about 5-10 percent each year.”

With September nearing, BWW will soon be carrying Samuel Adams’ Oktoberfest, a popular favorite, and the sports bar/restaurant has also seen success with Alaskan White.

“We constantly change our taps out, but those (Coor’s Light and Bud Light) are two domestics that definitely always stay there,” Duffley said. “Definitely two of the most popularly ordered.”

Over at Twin Peaks, Tay Terrance says her customers enjoy mostly domestics as well, but she prefers Angry Orchard, a hard apple cider that BWW also carries.

“We get a lot of beer, mostly,” Terrance said. “Not too many mixed drinks. We do sell a few Tito’s Tea.”

Given the option, however, Terrance said she’d recommend a Malibu Whipped to customers who want to try a cocktail, which includes Malibu rum, Pinnacle Whipped, cherry grenadine and pineapple juice, and is topped with whipped cream and a cherry.

On the lighter side, Fiddlestrings bartender Ashley Nelson says their most popular shot is currently a cucumber shot, which includes Effen cucumber vodka, sweet and sour and Sprite.

“Anything with that Effen cucumber is pretty good. I’m stuck on it right now. You can make a Bloody Mary out of it, you can make a Chilton out of it, it’s pretty popular,” Nelson said. However, “We sell a lot of beer. It’s probably about 50/50.”

Cocktail-wise at Buffalo Wild Wings, Duffley recommends a Chilton for women and a Knockout for men, adding that the latter is an in-house drink that is one of the most popular among his clientele.

A Knockout includes Skyy Vodka, Disaronno, Southern Comfort, sweet and sour and wild berry mix, with a lemon wedge on the side.

Out of sincere dedication to accurate reporting, LIVE! sent web monkey Dylan Underwood to BWW Tuesday afternoon to sample the Knockout, which he described as “tropical”.

unless you're a bartender, ya probably wouldn't know- but it's called Effen vodka, not Essen. ;) it also makes a rockin Effen cucumber martini !!!
Most people who drink do not drive under the influence or get into wrecks as a result of their drinking, it's but a select few whose hard-wired ignorance and stupidty is exacerbated with alcohol. The first DWI a person gets should enact an automatic, mandatory revoking of one's license. If they're caught a second time they should be permanently barred from purchasing alcohol. Repeat offenders are indicative of painless punishments (e.g. half a dozen DWI's and still driving, drinking and free).
