Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Intoxication Manslaughter with Vehicle

Gary Dean Coleman III, 37, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Judge Woodward’s 119th District Court on Tuesday, when he plead guilty to two charges stemming from a three-car fatality crash that occurred in November last year.

The crash occurred on Nov. 5, 2013 at approximately 10:55 p.m., a Tuesday, at the intersection of 33rd and Bryant when Coleman attempted to turn left on 33rd, pulling in front of a Dodge truck. Coleman’s car was struck by the oncoming vehicle and then collided with a Ford Ranger stopped at a sign in the intersection.

At the time of the crash, Coleman’s blood alcohol level was beyond the legal limit and his 11-year-old son was in the back seat of the car. The boy was partially ejected from the vehicle in the crash and a 53-year-old passenger, Jimmy Gann, was found to be deceased in the front seat of the car. Both Coleman and his son were transported to the hospital with injuries.

According to a complaint filed with the court, responding officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol emitting from Coleman at the scene. Reports state that Coleman later told the attending physician he “probably had a couple of beers earlier”, the complaint states.

Coleman’s son sustained a fractured hip and multiple lacerations to his face that required stitches.

Coleman has a lengthy history of intoxication charges, including a June 26, 2001 and a Nov. 20, 2007 conviction for driving while intoxicated. When he was jailed on Nov. 5, 2013, Coleman was charged with intoxication manslaughter with vehicle, intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury using vehicle, DWI 3rd or more and DWI with child under 15 years of age.

Coleman plead guilty to intoxication manslaughter with vehicle and intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury using vehicle on Tuesday in Judge Ben Woodward’s court, in agreement that the state drop the inclusion of the term deadly weapon in both charges, which was part of the original indictment. Both DWI charges were dismissed.

For each charge, Coleman was sentenced to 10 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also ordered to pay $80 restitution.

The flaw with the criminal justice system is that it is designed only to punish. This guy was a victim of his own self-destruction, and because of it, he caused irreversible damage. It's unfortunate we can't banish those unwilling to change to an addict's island somewhere they can live with thier own kind.
My father was a great man who would not want any of you to think he was killed by my cousin his nephew , best friend . Since I was a little girl my dad told me that him and god had an understanding and I have no doubt that is true. God's wisdom and leadership chose one of the strongest men I know home to his kingdom. No man can judge only the Lord has that authority . I love and miss my dad very much but will not morn his death but rejoice in his name . He is with Jesus in a kingdom god has made for all his children who believe in him . So instead of trying to speak about what is not yours to speak on , stop and take a min and ask for god to come in your hearts and ask our father in heaven to welcome you with open arms . I know he proudly welcomed my father with open arms. I stand proud when I say I will support my cousin Gary threw this the way my dad taught me to and the way our Father who sacrificed his son for All of our sins . ALL OF OURS

I wish I could say I'm sorry about your father's death.... However, your father was the passenger in a vehicle driven by an individual that he knew to be drunk.... and he allowed this to happen, with a young kid's life at stake as well. SHAME ON HIM! Shame on Gary Coleman for AGAIN, driving while intoxicated. Judging by his rap sheet, he was quite experienced at this.... experienced absolutely does not mean invincible. Perhaps your father was "more" drunk than Gary? In this case, they BOTH should have called a cab, or made arrangements to sleep their ass where they passed out. It is NOT ok for these individuals to be out, gambling with the lives of everyone around them. How wonderful that your family had all decided to throw their hands up to our God and pass your problem off to Him. Unfortunately, He only took care of half of it.
I will make sure and pray extra for you . If you think I will let Satan win your wrong . Your are right we did leave my dad in God's hands there is nothing he will not help my family with . Are hearts are at ease with my dad's passing you see our Lord doesn't want to see his children suffering and my dad hadn't told very many people that he was very sick and was fixing to pass in a painful way from his illness. My heart was uneasy at first but then I started to get my facts straight my dad died instantly no pain or suffering for him to go threw. I never said it was right drinking and driving it's not . That is why my cousin is doing this prison time but trust me ten years isn't all he was sentenced to he has a lifetime of living with this and not only that he isn't with his son . For this reason. Me and my family forgiving gary is our choice not anyone else's . A mistake was made but I believe in my god so strongly that this will be an eye opening for gary to change for the better and that will show his son that God is bigger than any addiction or slandering of his name . I stand behind gary not as a cousin who's father was taken from her but as a SISTER IN CHRIST our Lord and savior who when we asked for his hand in how sick my daddy was prayer is strong because that accident yes killed my dad but in the same light took my dad home where there is no sickness or pain only the love of our holly father . That very same accident has changed gary for the better it's not you or me who decide only God knows and he shows everyone in different ways not to do things like this . Because it is him we will answer to not a man woman daughter or a person like your self who doesn't realize we are human we are going to mess up . That's why God tells uso to believe and he will carry us threw . Where We see only one set of foot prints we are not alone he did not abandon us not even you when you're at your worst if you put it in his hands the set of footprints you see won't belong to you they are his every step as the Lord my god carries us threw. My prayers are with you that it's not to late when the Lord comes I'm going to pray that the way my dad is heaven not only me but you are forgiven for your sins and excepted into glory to . The ones left behind it will be to late so instead of focusing on saying such awful things work on silence so you can hear God's word in every thing right or wrong that you do .
