Six Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in San Angelo

Memorial Day is Monday, May 26, culminating a three-day vacation weekend. Those desiring to avoid a long arduous car trip out of town will find plenty to do in San Angelo this weekend. Here are six things to celebrate Memorial Day in San Angelo.

1. Swimming Pools

Love Municipal Pool opens for the Memorial Day weekend, with public swimming from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Admission is $5 per person for ages 3-64, free for children younger than 3, and $3 for 65 and older.

2. Lake Nasworthy

Day passes to Middle Concho and Spring Creek parks at Lake Nasworthy are available at the entrance gates to those parks for $3 per vehicle for City residents and $6 per vehicle for non-residents. Camping permits cost $6 per campsite per night for City residents and $12 for non-residents, and may also be purchased at the entrance gates and at Spring Creek Marina. Camping permits are always required. Day passes are required on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through Labor Day.

Because of Nasworthy’s declining level, only three public boat ramps remain open: at the northern end of South Concho Park, at the entrance of Middle Concho Park and northeast of the San Angelo Nature Center, which is at 7409 Knickerbocker Road.

3. Fun at the Fort

At Fort Concho, exercises to honor the nation's military who have made the ultimate sacrifice will be conducted at 9 a.m. in front of the Headquarters Building at the east end of the Parade Ground. The guest speaker will be Brian Campbell, a retired U.S. Army colonel of the Medical Corps. Campbell enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1976 and served in both the Army and Marine Corps at various posts until 2006.

During the program, the Harmony Belles will perform patriotic music, and the Fort Concho Living History Program and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans will provide the color guard and artillery salute. The program and reception are organized by the Pocahontas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Fort Concho will be open for self-guided tours on Memorial Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call the fort at 325-481-2646.

4. San Angelo Colts Baseball

Games will be held May 23, 24, and 25th at Foster Field, 1600 University Avenue. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m.

5. Dancing

The Case Hardin Band will be playing at the San Angelo VFW, 125 S. Browning Street,  on Friday the 23rd and will start at 8 p.m. There’s a large dance floor and the beer is cheap.
