San Angeloans Show Support for Art-Ober-Fest

Pancakes, crafts, parades and dancing: Downtown was the place to be on Saturday, with Art-Ober Fest and the ASU Homecoming Parade drawing in a crowd.

Cars lined the streets and families walked laughing and smiling in the cool October air.

The day kicked off with the Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast on the corner of Concho Ave. and Chadbourne St.

Shortly after, the vendors arrived and set up shop in a parking lot near the Cactus Hotel on Twohig.

“We like to come out and support San Angelo,” said Judy Fowler of Candles Handmade by JF.

She explained that the vendor’s love to come out and that San Angelo is incredibly supportive, “A lot of people like our outside shows.”

Later in the afternoon, the big event was the Sahawe Indian Dancers, a performance group from Uvalde, Texas that travels and performs across Texas year-round.

Most of the dancers were in middle school or high school and many joined because of the rich tradition of the group.

“When I was little, I would always be inspired,” said Miguel Cruz, and Jesse Fernandez added, “I’m in football and it helps get me in shape.”

Over sixty people showed up for the early performance of the Sahawe Indian Dancers, and even joined in on a couple of friendship dances.

Overall Art-Ober Fest was successful and gave a little hint at what downtown brings to the table, as well as a tease for next weekend’s River Fest.
