Wall Hawks Shine on Day One at the Track State Championships

AUSTIN, TX — The 2024 UIL Track & Field State Championships kicked off on Thursday, May 3. Day 1 featured student-athletes from 3A and 4A divisions to see who would claim state championships in their respective events. The Concho Valley saw plenty of representation on Day 1. The Wall Hawks, Lady Hawks, and one athlete from Ballinger competed.

Highlighting the day was Wall’s Brigg Jones. The Junior all-around athlete showed up and showed out to claim his spot on the podium, not once, but twice. He competed on Thursday in the Triple Jump, Long Jump, and the 4x200-meter Relay.

  • Long Jump - 6th place - 21’7”
  • Triple Jump - 2nd place - 46’5.25”
  • 4x200-meter Relay - 3rd place - 1:27.14

Jones recorded 46 feet in the long jump for the first time all year at the state meet. His performance was good enough for the second-best triple-jumper in 3A in the entire state. A fellow triple jumper in the women’s 3A division was the Ballinger Lady Bearcats’ Matilda Galvan. Galvan placed 7th overall with a 35’9.75” leap.

Wall’s 4x200-meter relay 3rd place finish was another personal best on the season. At 1:27.14, the Hawks rebroke the school record for the second time this season. The relay team, made up of Evan Boehle, Reuben Rivas, Hagyn Barbee, and Briggs Jones, took time to talk to San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick after their race.

Wall’s lone Lady Hawk to compete on the day was Head Football and Track Coach Craig Slaughter’s daughter, Lexi Slaughter. Lexi returned to the state meet after qualifying a year ago in the 400-meter dash to try and make the podium. Unfortunately she missed the a medal by less than a second. She finished 4th overall with a 57.07 second run. Lexi talked about her race afterward.
