Wounded Big Spring Armed Fugitive Surrenders

BIG SPRING, TX — The Big Spring Police Department successfully apprehended Orlando Montanez, who was wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony.

The arrest followed a coordinated effort involving the Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division and Rangers Division, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office, and the Midland Police Department. 

Despite following several leads from CrimeStoppers, initial attempts to locate Montanez were unsuccessful.

A perimeter was maintained in the area where the incident occurred and at probable locations where Montanez might be found. 

At approximately 8:25 a.m., a Big Spring Police officer spotted Montanez running in a south alley from the 2100 block of Alabama. He then entered a storage shed behind a residence in the 2000 block of Alabama.

Law enforcement agencies established a perimeter. 

With the assistance of the Midland Police Department SWAT team, Montanez surrendered at 9:22 a.m. 

Montanez was found to have non-life-threatening gunshot wounds from the initial altercation and received immediate medical attention from Big Spring Fire/EMS. He is being transported to an outside hospital as a precaution and will face charges upon his return.

The Big Spring Police Department officer involved in the incident is in stable condition.
